About a dozen community members attended the meeting at Centro de Familia de Utah in South Salt Lake, where they discussed the bills and how the Latino community can get involved.
HB105 would allow state law enforcement officers to perform some immigration agent duties on routine traffic stops. It's headed for a Senate committee hearing.
HB437 would deny state and local services, except for those federally mandated, to undocumented immigrants. The bill is scheduled for a House committee hearing at 8 a.m. today at the Capitol.
Jesus Gonzalez, a Salt Lake City resident, said he didn't understand why HB105 was needed. He said if the state wants to round up undocumented workers living here, all it would have to do is send officers to the address on workers' Utah driving privilege cards.
"They already know where we live," he said. "They can come get us anytime."
A similar community meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. today at Centro Civico Mexicano, 155 S. 600 West, Salt Lake City. For information about the meeting, call 801-347-4126.
