SOUTH JORDAN - No player in the state this season has caught fire like Hillcrest's Ryan Brimley did Wednesday night. He scored a career-high 40 points, sank 10 three-pointers, and single-handedly kept the second-ranked Huskies competitive with fourth-ranked Bingham.

But it wasn't enough.

The Miners withstood Brimley's incredible display of long-range shooting and defeated the Huskies, 71-60. It was Hillcrest's first loss of the season.

It arguably was the Miners' biggest victory of the season. Their performance, which featured contributions from everyone in their 10-player rotation, was what their fans have expected of them since the season began. Bingham's superior depth wore down the Huskies and the Miners were able to put the game away in the fourth quarter with clutch free-throw shooting.

It was all overshadowed by Brimley's night. And in some strange way, the Miners didn't seem to mind.

"I'd have been in the stands with a towel, no matter who I was here to watch, spinning it for that kid," said Bingham coach Mark Dubach. "I've never seen anything like it. I've been coaching for 15 years, and that was unbelievable."

Dubach threw everything but his shoes at Brimley, and nothing deterred the sharpshooter. Brimley made some open shots. But he also hit them when he was being trapped, when he had a hand in his face and when he was more than three feet beyond the three-point line.

"I've never seen anybody play like that," said Bingham's Tyler Strong. "Shot up, shot in."

The Miners were able to put the game away when Brimley cooled off in the fourth quarter and Hillcrest guard Donnie Lao fouled out. After Brimley scored his 37th point of the game with his ninth three-pointer, the Miners pulled away with a 10-0 run. Strong hit a three-pointer and made two foul shots in the stretch that gave Bingham a 67-53 lead.

Dubach said his team didn't do anything special to slow Brimley down.

"He just got tired," Dubach said. "Otherwise, he'd have 60."
