Posted: 9:08 AM- LOGAN - The list of fans of a trial bus route that carries passengers from Preston, Idaho, to downtown Logan just got longer, and the latest folks to climb aboard are showing support with their pocketbooks.

Franklin County and Preston City officials announced this week that they will kick in $5,000 each to keep the buses running, and Laidlaw International will donate 100 driving hours to the cause.

The combined contributions will keep the shuttle running up and down the Utah/Idaho Highway 91 corridor through mid-February.

The commuter service - free to riders - began Oct. 16 with $30,000 from the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality to remedy air-quality problems in the bowl-shaped basin.

Cache Valley Transit District Director Todd Beutler told the Cache County Council this week that the three-month shuttle service will run at least one month past the original Jan. 16 expiration. Meanwhile, Beutler said, supporters of the commuter service are recommending the adoption of a half-cent sales tax to pay for the service year-round.
