Effective Dec. 16, customers of the West Jordan Wild Oats, located in Jordan Landing, will have to find another source for organic and natural foods.

Wild Oats Markets Inc. said Tuesday it will close its only west-side store in Salt Lake County, along with stores in Fort Collins, Colo., and Omaha, Neb., for failing to meet sales goals.

According to spokeswoman Sonja Tuitele, the West Jordan location doesn't meet the Wild Oats' newly adopted density requirements - 100,000 people within a 10-mile drive of the store - to stay open.

The company's stores in downtown Salt Lake City, Sugar House, Highland and Park City are performing well and are not candidates for closure, Tuitele said.

"Salt Lake has become a very important market for us and a good market for us," she said.

The West Jordan store opened in June 2004.

The remaining stores will be able to absorb most of the 53 employees displaced by the West Jordan shutdown, she added.

The Boulder, Colo.-based retailer operates 115 natural-foods stores in 24 states.

In addition to the West Jordan, Fort Collins and Omaha closures, the company also is shuttering five Henry's Farmers Markets in the Phoenix area.
