Posted: 11:23 AM- TRAX light-rail ridership has hit a major milestone. Since the trains started running in 2000, more than 50 million passengers have come on board.

Utah Transit Authority General Manager John Inglish says the 50-millionth rider was a commuter who boarded sometime during the evening commute on Sept. 25.

UTA estimates that the 50 million passengers avoided producing nearly 130 million tons of air pollutants and saved the equivalent of 12.5 million gallons of gasoline.

TRAX currently averages more than 58,300 riders per day on its 15-mile north-south line and the 4-mile University line.

Salt Lake County voters will decide Nov. 7 whether to allow a quarter-cent sales tax increase to help pay for more TRAX lines in the Salt Lake Valley.
