Julianna Redd's mind raced with worry as her parents whisked her in a van toward Colorado and away from her fiance in Provo, whom she was scheduled to marry in just 24 hours.

The 21-year-old Brigham Young University bride-to-be contemplated, at one point during the trip, jumping from her parents' van to escape, thinking that was the only way she would ever see her would-be groom Perry Myers again. The couple had met while attending BYU and were to be married in the LDS Temple in Salt Lake City on Aug. 5.

But Julianna's parents, Lemuel and Julia Redd, of Monticello, were against the union and had tried to talk their daughter out of tying the knot.

On Aug. 4, the day before Julianna was to say "I do," her parents took drastic measures to stop the wedding. Under the guise of taking Julianna to Orem to pick up her wedding clothes at 11 a.m., 59-year-old Julia and 61-year-old Lemuel Redd took her across state lines, allegedly against her will.

The Utah County Attorney's Office is calling what Julianna's parents did illegal. Second-degree felony charges of kidnapping were filed against mother and father last week in 4th District Court.

Julianna said she knew something was wrong that August morning when her parents began driving south from Provo instead of north to Orem, where her wedding clothes were waiting.

She thought, "Oh no, they are going to try and talk me out of it again," she said.

During the four to six hour ride to Colorado, Julianna said her parents spoke little to her. She described the drive and lack of conversation as "very frustrating."

At some point, Julianna convinced her parents to stop so she could relieve herself. She said she was escorted to and from the restroom and afterward forced back into the van. She had not had a chance to contact Myers and tell him what was happening.

Myers knew something was wrong, though, when Julianna did not show up for a dinner engagement the pair had made with his parents. The 23-year-old groom called Provo police.

That evening, at a previously reserved hotel room in Grand Junction, Julianna's parents apparently tried one last time to talk their daughter out of marriage. Julianna declined to talk about the conversation.

"Those are details I'd rather not discuss," she said. She later added, "It has nothing to do with Perry. It was just problems our family has been dealing with our whole lives. Control issues. Communication issues."

The next morning, Julianna's parents returned her to Provo after she promised them she would not call Myers. They arrived after the scheduled wedding ceremony was to take place.

But when Julianna got home, Myers was at her apartment and the pair fled to the sanctuary of his parents' home, where they stayed for several days.

On Aug. 8, four days after they had wanted to get married, Julianna and Myers said their vows and tied the knot. Her parents did not attend the ceremony.

Lemuel and Julia Redd are now scheduled to make an initial appearance in court on Oct. 26 before 4th District Judge Claudia Laycock.

Julianna said she and Myers met with the county attorney and requested that he move forward with the case against her parents.

"I just want them to get help," she said.

As for her marriage, "It's better than I imagined it to be," Julianna said.

Several attempts were made to contact the Redds. Myers also declined to be interviewed for this story.
