Posted: 12:12 PM- Thomas L. Miller is the new chief medical officer of University of Utah Hospitals and Clinics.

Miller specializes in internal medicine, with a particular interest in patients with diabetes.

He has presented nationally on how physicians can do a better job of identifying and treating diabetes-related foot ulcers, which are the leading cause of amputation.

Diabetic patients often lose sensation in their feet. That leads to excessive and continuous pressure at certain points of the foot, which then causes skin breakdown and infection.

"The reason they don't get better is that they can't feel the areas they're damaging, so they don't heal," Miller said. "'Physicians" need to be examining the feet at every visit and be aware that they will develop complications that can lead to amputation without close followup."

In his new role, Miller will work with medical directors throughout University Health Care to improve patient access and satisfaction. They'll look at everything from better ways to accept phone calls to faster ways to get patients into clinics, he said.

Prior to his appointment as CMO, Miller was the executive director of the hospital's ambulatory clinics.

He earned his undergraduate degree from Colorado College and his medical degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He interned and was chief resident of internal medicine at the University of Utah.

He is an assistant professor of internal medicine at the U.
