Utah County Republicans tossed out long-time County Attorney Kay Bryson today, while GOP activists in Salt Lake County sent Sheriff Aaron Kennard to a primary.

Kennard, who is running for his fifth term as the county's top cop, will face political newcomer Brent Cardall in a June 27 primary.

In the bare-knuckled Utah County Republican Convention, party delegates ousted Bryson in favor of deputy County Attorney Jeff Buhman. They also sent Commissioner Jerry Grover to a primary with Gary Anderson.

Rep. Margaret Dayton defeated state Sen. Parley Hellewell for the Orem Senate seat despite a dirty campaign attack against Dayton in recent days. Hellewell said he had nothing to do with accusations about marital infidelity that was sent to delegates.

Rep. Dave Cox, a school teacher, was defeated by Kenneth Sumsion for the Lehi House seat.

And Rep. Jim Ferrin, of Orem, was forced into a primary with Orem City Councilman Stephen Sandstrom.

In Salt Lake County, Kennard will face his first primary in 16 years. His opponent is a state probation and parole administrator.

In the District Attorney's race, Lohra Miller, a prosecutor for four Salt Lake County cites, eliminated Kent Morgan, long-time deputy district attorney. Miller goes on to face Democrat Sim Gill in November.

Just one incumbent legislator in Salt Lake County was forced into a primary. Rep. Peggy Wallace of West Jordan will face off with challenger Jim Bird in a June 27 primary.

But other sitting lawmakers fared well.

Rep. Kory Holdaway, of Taylorsville, handily defeated former county party leader Milton Witt. And South Jordan Rep. Merlynn Newbold defeated challenger Michael Walters.

In the County GOP's most competitive legislative race, a Sandy Senate seat, Developer Bryson Garbett fell just two votes short of the 60 percent needed to secure the nomination. He will face a run-off election with Wayne Niederhauser, hand-picked successor of retiring Sen. Al Mansell. Eliminated at convention was Jim Bennett, son of U.S. Sen. Bob Bennett.

In West Valley's House District 33 anti-illegal immigration activist Alex Segura, a leader of the so-called Minuteman movement, lost to Pete Moesser. Moesser, who also has strong views on undocumented immigrants, will go on to face Democratic Rep. Neal Hendrickson in November.

In Utah County, County Commissioner Steve White held onto his seat, defeating two GOP challengers. But Treasurer Kim Jackson was knocked out by Robert Kirk.

And in legislative races, Reps. Brad Daw, of Orem, and Aaron Tilton, of Springville, beat opponents to claim the party's nominations.

Republicans will hold a primary to pick a GOP replacement for Dayton in House District 61, with Garr Judd and Keith Grover failing to get 60 percent of the vote.
