Rob Weyher, 54, the chairman of the Summit County Democratic Party, was arrested late Tuesday and cited on suspicion of DUI, assault on a police officer, interfering with a police officer, disorderly conduct and speeding - all misdemeanors.

He posted cash bail of $4,065 early Wednesday morning and was released from the Summit County jail. Defense attorney Joe Tesch on Thursday said Weyher is not guilty of the charges.

"From what we know at the moment, it looks like a misunderstanding," he said. "If charges are lodged, we feel he will be found innocent."

Utah Highway Patrol Lt. Doug McCleve said Weyher was arrested during a routine traffic stop when a trooper smelled alcohol on his breath. Some field-sobriety tests were performed before Weyher became "combative," McCleve said.

Summit County Attorney David Brickey said his office was in the process of collecting reports and screening the case. If Brickey decides to level criminal charges, it won't be before May 5, he said.
