TOOELE - Larry Miller sat in a trailer perched on a pile of dirt, nearly 30 miles west of Salt Lake City on Wednesday afternoon, with his latest project outside, shrouded in a cloud of dust.

But that didn't diminish the Utah Jazz owner's enthusiasm for Miller Motorsports Park, which released its schedule for the 2006 season, its first ever, on Wednesday.

"Most of my businesses have been called somewhat eclectic," said the owner of movie theaters, car dealerships, a restaurant and two professional sports teams. "But they did serve a purpose. This, the racetrack, is purely for fun."

Miller, an avid fan of race car driving in general and, more specifically, historic racing, unveiled the new track, which is still under construction, and a schedule of events on Wednesday afternoon in Tooele's Deseret Peak Complex.

The calendar pledges an unusual mix of meets, and at least one nationally televised race, in its first year.

"Part of the spectrum is to share it with as broad a number of people who are interested in racing as we can," Miller said.

The biggest draw will likely be the American Le Mans Series, which comes to Utah from July 14-15. A two-hour block of it will be broadcast by CBS on July 16. The track will also be host to the AMA Superbike Doubleheader from June 16-18, the SCCA Pro racing SPEED World Challenge from July 14-15 and Historic Sports Car and Grand American Road Racing events later in the summer.

Typically, a new track must prove its worth before it begins to attract top-tier races. Miller, and the track's architect and general manager, Alan Wilson, said they think it will be among the best in the nation, though not necessarily right away.

"This will be a work in progress for a long time," Miller said. "As we learn from our racers."

The early reviews were promising. Patrick Long, the youngest American ever to sign with the Porsche racing team at age 21, toured the East portion of the track - the West has not been laid down - and gave it good marks.

"It's very quick but technical at the same point," Long said. "A lot of times you see great plans but they are never carried out. Here, they have been."

The 4.5-mile track - the longest in the country - can be divided into two separate tracks, to be used simultaneously. The East (2.3 miles) is easier than the West (2.24 miles). The races will run counterclockwise, a concession to track safety. A shorter, smaller kart track opens Friday.

The facility is branded as a place both for premier drivers and newcomers to the sport, or those who may be looking for a practice site or home for their cars.

The 511-acre site will be home to Grand Prix style garages that go straight out to the track, paddocks for shorter and longer stays, a clubhouse, complete with a VIP club, parking for 30,000 and a tram system to transport fans.

"I would like to see this track as my legacy," said Wilson, who has overseen the construction of more than 20 tracks worldwide.

Miller Motorsports released a price list for season passes, $500 for a single pass, but offered little information about the cost of a one-day ticket. Miller said his goal, this time, wasn't to make money.

"We don't expect a high return on investment," said Miller, adding that he would be happy to cover operating costs. "We're not going to base participation costs on the costs of building it."
