Get ready for the Salt Lake Alliance. Or Salt Lake Glory. Or Salt Lake Highlanders. Maybe even Real Salt Lake. At a meeting of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah Thursday morning, Dave Checketts, the owner of Utah's new Major League Soccer team, revealed a short list of possible names for the team.

The team expects to make an official announcement of the team's name, logo and colors by the middle of August. Of the four possibilities, Checketts said he had favorites, but would not elaborate.

"I would still like it to be traditional," Checketts said.

Reaction to the names was mixed at the meeting. Checketts suggested a vote on the names by applause, and Alliance, Glory and Highlanders each received a moderate amount. Real Salt Lake, a variation on the well known European team Real Madrid, received very little applause. Variations on the proposed names, Checketts said, also are being considered.

Checketts also mentioned a few names the team will not adopt. The team will not be named the Seagulls or Pioneers. Jokingly, he said the Cricketzz and the Brine Shrimp will not be the name.

Also as a joke, Checketts suggested a team named the Highlanders might wear kilts instead of shorts.
