Not everyone likes staying at public campgrounds, including those in state and national parks and other public lands. Some like the amenities provided by private facilities that can include hookups for trailers or motor homes, swimming pools, showers, stores and laundromats.

A new website, www.accesscamping.com, provides information to more than 500 campground databases across the country. Checking the Utah site, the government-run campground information was sketchy. The site had nothing on federal facilities and just a link to the Utah State Park home page. Those who favor federal facilities probably would have better luck with www.reserveamerica.com.

But this site did have good information on private facilities, particularly chains like KOA and Good Sam. The website also includes an iPhone application. The new site has links to industry directors including the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds, the Trailer Life and Woodall's North American Campground Directories as well as the websites of major campground chains.
