The Kaysville City Council began airing its twice-a-month meetings online last week.
Residents will be able to watch the meetings live at www.kaysvilletv.com.
"The meeting Tuesday [March 16] night didn't have a whole ton of viewers, but the service is there if they're interested," said Mayor Steve Hiatt, adding the night probably reached a top viewership of 15 hits at one point.
But he hopes the option to view council meetings from home instead of at City Hall will encourage more residents to become involved in their local government and make the process more transparent.
"We should be using technology to make information more available," Hiatt said, adding agenda items will likely affect how many people will stream the live broadcasts.
Hiatt said the idea arose a few years ago when the City Council wanted to make meetings more transparent, but options to have a local Davis Cable 17 or another Internet streamer broadcast the meetings were too expensive. Finally, Hiatt was able to find Livestream, a free service.
And the camera -- "I paid for it myself because I was kind of excited about this idea," he said.
Hiatt said he hopes other cities implement a similar service in the aims of getting their residents involved in city business.
Residents will get their next chance to watch the City Council during its 7 p.m. meeting April 6 at City Hall, 23 E. Center St.; council meetings are generally held the first and third Tuesdays of each month.
The next Kaysville City Council meeting residents can watch on the Internet will begin at 7 p.m. April 6; go to www.kaysvilletv.com.
