To attract more visitors to Utah's 26 state and national scenic byways, a new online guide on the Utah Office of Tourism Web site, www.utah.travel, has been developed.

A direct link to the site is available through http://sgsdigital.com/pubs/ut/byway/.

The online information about the history, recreation, nature, archeology and culture of each byway parallels the contents of a 64-page guide designed by graphic artist Larry Clarkson and organized by Gael Hill, Utah's scenic byway coordinator.

"This new online guide will allow travelers to view and print the pages on demand that are of interest to them," said Leigh von der Esch, the Utah Office of Tourism's managing director and chairwoman of the Utah State Scenic Byway Committee.

"Utah's byways bring visitors through our communities from Bear Lake to Zion National Park, allowing them to learn about many of our hidden treasures that relate to the early pioneers, American Indians, dinosaurs and more," she added.

Utah's scenic-byway system includes more than 2,200 miles of highway. Eight byways received the designation from the Federal Highway Administration, including Scenic Byway 12, which is the state's only "All-American Road." Scenic Byway 12 connects Bryce Canyon and Capitol Reef national parks, passing over Boulder Mountain in its 124-mile route.

The state's newest national byway is State Route 143, between Parowan and Panguitch, which was designated last year as the Patchwork Parkway. Other national scenic byways include the Trail of the Ancients, Nebo Loop, Logan Canyon, Flaming Gorge-Uintas, Dinosaur Diamond and the Energy Loop: Huntington and Eccles canyons.
