Wet storm welcome, but we need more

With most big storms missing the Wasatch Front this winter, water officials had to be happy about the storm that hit Wednesday night and dropped a heavy, wet snow into Thursday morning.

"The way this winter has gone any precipitation is good precipitation," said National Weather Service forecaster David Myrick. "We are still far behind in the water year."

The Salt Lake weather station recorded an inch of snow containing .56 of water by 7 a.m. Thursday and Snowbird, in Little Cottonwood Canyon, saw 11.5 inches of snow by 6 a.m. Resort officials reported 14 inches of powder had fallen in the 24 hours starting Wednesday afternoon.

Other snow totals around the state included 3 inches on the Bountiful bench, 4 inches in Olympus Cove, 3 inches in Milford and 3 inches in Cedar City.

Through Thursday, Salt Lake City was still 3.17 inches short of the normal precipitation -- 6.70 inches -- that is received between now and when the water year begins on Oct. 1.

Myrick said another storm scheduled to reach Utah Saturday afternoon is likely to follow the path of most others this winter and "split or fall apart" before it arrives.

"The bulk of the energy looks like it will impact southern Utah and northern Arizona," he said. "It won't leave much of anything in the north, but the mountains of southern Utah could get a few inches of snow overnight."
