A Senate committee voted unanimously Wednesday to pass HB107, which eliminates a mandate on animal shelters to surrender dogs and cats for medical research and requires that shelter workers make reasonable efforts to contact owners of lost pets.

Members of the Senate Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment Committee also placed the bill, sponsored by Rep. Jen Seelig, D-Salt Lake City, on the Senate's consent calendar. That means it may be approved by the Senate without debate.
