The Utah Senate approved a resolution Tuesday aimed at curbing the growing problem of prescription-drug abuse.

SCR2, sponsored by Sen. Pat Jones, D-Salt Lake City, addresses educating prescription users about their potent medications and how to dispose of unused portions without harming the environment or allowing them to fall into the wrong hands.

The nonbinding resolution cautions against flushing drugs down sinks or toilets and lists a Web site where Utahns can find a nearby disposal site: http://tinyurl.com/ykonp4o.

It also encourages physicians to educate patients about potential drug abuse and to check the Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing's controlled-substance database for individual risk.

The measure passed 24-1. Sen. Margaret Dayton, R-Orem, cast the lone no vote.
