The Southwest Utah Public Health Department received a second order of H1N1 flu vaccine late last week and third is expected by week's end or the beginning of the week of Oct. 18, said spokesman David Heaton.

He said the 1,300 nasal spray doses in the latest shipment will be distributed to emergency medical technicians and pediatric-family practices in Washington, Kane, Garfield, Iron and Beaver counties, which have a combined population of 225,000.

The 1,000 doses of injectable vaccine received will be distributed to several pediatric clinics in St. George and Cedar City for high-risk children ages 6 months to 4 years.

He said the latest vaccine is the only brand approved for small children, and the department does not expect to receive more vaccine from that particular manufacturer for some time, so the young age group is targeted now.

Additional shipments are expected weekly, and the vaccine will be offered to those at highest risk in the following order:

» Pregnant Women

» Healthcare Workers

» Caregivers of infants under 6 months of age

» Children ages 6 months to 4 years old

» Everyone ages 4 to 24

» People ages 25-65 with chronic health conditions

»H1N1 vaccine will then be made available to the general public.

Heaton said seven people in the five-county area are hospitalized with flu symptoms.
