An inmate at the Utah State Prison in Draper suffered a puncture wound to the head during an apparent stabbing Saturday afternoon.

The attack took place in a common area of the prison's Wasatch housing unit shortly before 4 p.m., when the victim and his assailant got into some sort of altercation, said Angie Welling, a spokeswoman for the Utah Department of Corrections.

The assault wasn't witnessed by corrections officers, who were reviewing video tape Saturday to determine what led to the attack.

It wasn't immediately known what kind of weapon was used in the attack.

The man was transported to an area hospital to be treated for the wound on the side of his head, Welling said. He reportedly was in fair condition late Saturday.
