The massive multi-agency search for the body of 8-year-old Trejon Fite, who fell in the Jordan River June 13 and never resurfaced, was called off Thursday.

Ten agencies and 100 officers searched with cadaver dogs and sonar equipment.

Members of Fite's family walked the canal banks or stood by and watched.

"I'm just hoping for closure," said Fite's grandmother, JoAnn Brown, 53. "It's been really stressful this week since they haven't found him."

Fite was sliding across a pipe above the canal when he slipped off and into the fast-moving water. Nobody has seen him since.

Police stopped regular searches about two weeks ago, and Thursday was their first large-scale effort since then. Fite's body

was not found by the end of the day, and police have decided not to continue the search, Salt Lake City police spokeswoman Robin Snyder said.

Officials thought Fite's body would most likely surface by Thursday. Crews were searching 14 miles of canal starting at California Avenue and Redwood Road extending northwest past Salt Lake City International Airport.

Fite's family members have been searching every day since the accident, Brown said. Starting early in the morning, they walk and drive the banks.

"He was such a special kid," Brown said. "So many people loved him."

She remembers how much he liked Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game, racing games on the Xbox and watching wrestling with his grandfather. He

liked playing soccer and playing with friends, Brown said.

"I loved him a whole lot, and it's really hard to see him gone," Brown said.
