A 65-year-old woman suffered serious injuries after her kitchen caught on fire in West Valley City on Sunday.

The fire started after the woman forgot about food on her stove on the 3300 South block of LeeAnn Street (3250 West), said Assistant Fire Chief Kris Romijn.

She discovered the fire and called 911 about 6:30 a.m., he said. The woman, who has difficulty walking, was initially unable to escape the house. Crews arrived to a pounding on the door and found her just inside.

They brought her to the ambulance and doused the blaze, which was mainly confined to the kitchen area and caused about $40,000 in damage. She was taken to LDS Hospital after breathing in "quite a bit of smoke," Romijn said.

Two dogs and two cats also were rescued from the house.
