When a thunderstorm hit the downtown Salt Lake City, a banner on the Salt Palace's tower broke loose and began swinging and breaking the building's windows about 7:45 p.m. Friday. The Salt Lake City Fire Department crew came to remove the remains of broken glass from the tower, said Allyson Jackson, general manager of the Salt Palace. Anna Kartashova / The Salt Lake Tribune

Heavy thunderstorms that moved through the Salt Lake Valley on Friday left about 4,600 customers without power for a portion of the evening.

Wind and rain caused power to be knocked out to customers in Magna, West Valley City, Erda and Salt Lake City's Rose Park neighborhood around 6:30 p.m., said Rocky Mountain Power spokesman David Eskelsen.

Crews had managed to restore power in the majority of the homes by 9 p.m. Friday, he said.

About 1,200 customers in Riverdale were also without power around 9:15 p.m. Friday after strong winds caused insulators to fail, cutting power to homes, Eskelsen said.

Crews were working to restore power to Riverdale residents late Friday.
