A Park City woman suffered critical injuries when she swerved to avoid a deer on State Road 248 in Summit County late Friday night, police said.

The 51-year-old woman was driving west about 11:15 p.m. when the young deer jumped out in front of her Subaru Impreza near the 10 mile marker, said Utah Highway Patrol trooper Cade Brenchley.

She swerved, but still hit the deer. She lost control of the car, crossed the eastbound lanes and went off the road. The car rolled down an embankment at least three times, throwing her from the vehicle.

She was flown by medical helicopter to University Hospital in critical condition, but later improved, Brenchley said. Her injuries did not appear to be life-threatening. She was not wearing a seatbelt and alcohol may have been involved.
