Alltel wireless phone customers in 18 Utah counties could be affected by AT&T's purchase of that company's network from Verizon wireless.

AT&T and Verizon announced last month that AT&T had agreed to purchase the Alltel network in those Utah counties after Verizon had purchased Alltel. As part of that deal, Verizon was required by federal regulators to sell off areas where both companies had operations in order to preserve competition.

In Utah, that requirement led to the AT&T agreement.

For current Verizon customers in the 18 Utah counties, the AT&T deal will have no impact. But Alltel customers in those counties will eventually have to switch phones and rate plans if the deal gains regulatory approval.

AT&T said it expected approval by the end of this year, with another year before AT&T makes the transition.

A story in Thursday's Salt Lake Tribune mistakenly reported that Utah Verizon customers in those counties would be affected. That was based on information provided by an AT&T spokeswoman and included in a press release.

Utah counties involved in the deal include Juab, Millard, Sanpete, Sevier, Beaver, Iron, Washington, Carbon, Daggett, Duchesne, Emery, Grand, Uintah, Garfield, Kane, Piute, San Juan and Wayne.

Phones » AT&T's takeover of Verizon wireless network means some customers will need to change plans.
