A 41-year-old Kamas man shot and killed by police following an early Thursday chase has been identified as Wade Russell Pennington -- a convicted burglar who had run from police before.
Pennington was nabbed by Nevada Highway Patrol in 2001 after he led troopers and Las Vegas police on a high-speed chase, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Troopers tried to stop Pennington near the Las Vegas Speedway when they noticed the car he was in had been reported stolen. He sped away at speeds higher than 100 mph before eventually slowing and jumping from the car, where police caught him after a short foot chase.
A woman caught with Pennington told police the two were involved in as many as 40 burglaries in the Las Vegas area, and as many as 20 in Mesquite, authorities say.
A Utah court search shows Pennington also has a slew of local convictions dating back to 1986 -- many for burglaries and running from police.
The most recent chase began when South Jordan officers saw Pennington driving his black Nissan Pathfinder near 9800 South and Bangerter Highway, where businesses had been burglarized, according to West Jordan police.
Police did not initially pursue Pennington, but when officers saw him in a neighborhood around 1:30 a.m. he allegedly tried to ram his SUV into a police car and fled.
Police followed Pennington into West Jordan, where they say he rammed two police cars. Officers cornered him in a cul-de-sac at 2408 W. Marion Drive (7720 South). Pennington repeatedly rammed the police car in an apparent effort to escape. A South Jordan officer then fired at Pennington and killed him.
Neighbors reported hearing two to three shots before sirens went silent. West Jordan police and the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office are investigating the shooting and the officer involved is on paid leave.
