A 64-year-old man died Sunday morning when a tire blew out and caused his pickup to roll.

The man was driving his GMC south on Interstate 15 at 10:45 a.m. when the left front tire blew and the man lost control of his pickup four miles north of Mona in central Utah, said Highway Patrol Sgt. Ted Tingey.

The pickup swerved sideways into the dirt and grass area in the freeway's center median. It then rolled onto its top and ejected the man, who was not wearing a seat belt, Tingey said.

Emergency crews took him by ambulance to Central Valley Medical Center in Nephi, but he died en route to the hospital, Tingey said.

UHP investigators believe the accident was caused only by the man's tire and do not suspect either speed or alcohol contributed.

Tingey noted that UHP is in the middle of a "Click it or ticket" campaign this Memorial Day weekend and said a safety belt probably would have kept the man in the vehicle.

"It's very difficult to deal with these circumstances," Tingey said. "It feels like you're hitting your head against the wall trying to get people to buckle up."

Tingey would not release the man's name, noting highway patrol troopers are still trying to contact the man's next of kin.
