University of Utah police are investigating possible embezzlement involving the school's theater department in an investigation that appears linked to a department employee's suicide attempt.

Last month, an internal audit turned up a questionable billing submitted for reimbursement, according to an initial police report.

The report was taken on the morning of April 15. That afternoon West Wendover, Nev., police responded to a disturbance at a casino hotel room, where they found the theater department's accountant in the bathroom with apparent self-inflicted wounds, according to a police press release. The woman's husband was found dead in the bed with no signs of trauma on his body.

The man's body was sent to Reno, Nev., for an autopsy, while the woman was sent to Salt Lake City for treatment of her injuries, which were not considered life threatening.

West Wendover police Lt. Sandra Gunter said the death was ruled a suicide, but refused to release any further details.

Theater department chairman Gage Williams referred queries to the leadership of the U.'s College of Fine Arts. Dean Raymond Tymas-Jones declined to comment or provide any information.

"There is an internal audit and criminal investigation ongoing. Until they are both complete, we should not comment," U. spokeswoman Coralie Alder said.

A U. police spokesman said investigators are combing through a six-inch stack of subpoenaed bank records and the investigation will take time to complete.
