Centerfield police investigating the Thursday death of a 2-year-old child arrested the child's mother on Friday, according to a Sanpete County police dispatcher.
Police went to Gunnison Valley Hospital after receiving a report of an unresponsive child at 8:40 p.m. on Thursday, according to a news release issued by Centerfield Police Chief Brett McCall. The child had been taken there by ambulance and pronounced dead, the press release stated.
Medical personnel alerted police after hearing inconsistent statements from family members about how the child died. The child's 23-year-old mother said the child had drowned in a wading pool in the family's Centerfield yard. But doctors did not find any signs that the child had drowned, the press release stated.
Police did not say what charge the mother was booked into jail on or the sex of the child who died.
