Fire officials have declared "suspicious" a Monday blaze that swept through a South Salt Lake tortilla chip manufacturing plant.

"We ruled out an accident," said South Salt Lake Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Bowman, adding that the blaze "is down the suspicious road on the arson side of things."

Bowman said the investigation is ongoing, and investigators are now conducting interviews to determine what caused $250,000 in damages at the Deep Fryer Co. near 3000 South and State Street.

Bowman noted that the investigation could result in charges being filed against the person or persons deemed responsible for the fire, which did not spread to nearby businesses.

Firefighters from South Salt Lake, Midvale, Salt Lake City, West Valley City, Murray and the Unified Fire Authority were called to the Deep Fryer Co. just before 3 p.m. and battled the initial blaze for more than one hour.

Firefighters remained at the scene until 10 p.m. Monday night, tearing off the roof of the business to ensure all the buried fuels, such as grease, would not spark another blaze, Bowman said.

No one was injured in the fire, but Bowman called the business a total loss.
