Wally Bugden is one of the really great people in our community -- a consummate professional with impeccable integrity and a great sense of humor. Sadly, some reporters and editors disregard the harm they cause in the lives of such good people.
The story "Jeffs' attorney is suspected of public intoxication" ( Tribune , Feb. 8) led readers to believe that Warren Jeffs' lawyer did something outrageous. Did Wally get rowdy? Did he wear his underwear on his head?
Here's what happened: After drinks at a friend's, Wally made the responsible decision not to drive and went for a walk. On an empty suburban neighborhood road, he called his law partner to pick him up. Characteristically, Wally thought he'd be funny, so while he waited, he sat in the middle of the quiet road in a lotus position. An unamused neighbor called 911, and the responding officer was unwilling to solve the problem by suggesting that Wally stay off the road while awaiting his ride and arrested him for public intoxication.
These circumstances do not merit the foreseeable humiliation to a really decent person that comes from such a "news" article and accompanying police mug shot.
