A Utah House committee has approved a bill that would punish people who use fake IDs to buy alcohol in a bar by revoking their driver's licenses for a year.

Rep. Curtis Oda, R-Clearfield, says he's sponsoring House Bill 129 because state law doesn't punish minors who sneak into bars severely enough.

Oda says kids often use a real ID that belongs to someone older to get into a club, leaving bars liable for thousands of dollars in fines.

Under Oda's bill, the minor would be liable for fines imposed by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Anyone caught using a fake ID also would be charged with a class B misdemeanor on the first offense.

The bill passed in committee unanimously and now goes to the House floor.
