A toddler died Monday, one day after he was rushed to Primary Children's Medical Center in critical condition with head trauma from a television falling on him.

The 18-month-old was in a room with three other children -- all younger than 5 -- at a Millcreek apartment complex near 200 East and 4100 South. They were playing around 9:30 a.m. when a television got knocked off of a stand and onto the boy's head, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Lt. Don Hutson.

The boy's parents were home at the time. The father rushed in and lifted the TV off the boy. His son was not breathing, and he had blood coming out of his ears, Hutson said.

Hutson said it was unclear how large or heavy the television was. He said police are not investigating the boy's death as anything other than "an absolutely tragic accident."

"He clearly suffered major head trauma," Hutson said. "This appears to be an unfortunate accident."

Hutson said there have been similar cases lately where children have been struck by heavy falling objects at home. He encouraged parents to secure heavy objects around the home so they cannot easily fall.
