Traffic: Icy, hazardous on Utah roads

The Utah Department of Transportation has some advice for motorists today: If you don't have to drive, don't.

The agency has issued a number of warnings, and some road-closure advisories:

» I-80 through Parley's Canyon: Both directions are restricted to all vehicles including semis must have chains or 4-wheel drive.

» US-89 Sardine Canyon: Both directions are restricted to semi-trucks, and all vehicles must have chains or 4-wheel drive.

» SR 190: Big Cottonwood Canyon: Chains or 4x4 are required.

» SR 111: OPEN. White out conditions.

» I-15: Both directions Icy and snow-packed throughout Utah.

» I-15 at Box Elder Canyon: Icy with high winds.

Road closures:

» I-70: Through Salina Canyon at milepost 56 to milepost 90 - Closed.

» SR 210-Little Cottonwood Canyon: Closed.

» Salt Lake City: 7800 S. at 5200 W to 6700 W is closed due to weather.

» SR 143 Brian Head to Mammoth Creek Road: Closed until further notice due to high winds and blowing snow.

» SR 14: Closed due to weather.

The Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office also has warned that Little Cottonwood Canyon would close at 8:30 p.m. due to extreme avalanche danger. Avalanche control will begin Saturday morning.

Drivers are asked to stay out of the area until the canyon is reopened.
