Men's basketball: Kepkay leads Utes over cupcake

Senior guard Tyler Kepkay scored a game-high 26 points to lead the University of Utah men's basketball team past Grand Valley State, 59-44, in a preseason exhibition at the Huntsman Center.

Coming off the bench, Kepkay shot 8-for-14 from the field, going 5-for-7 on three-pointers. He was the only Ute to score in double figures.

Center Luke Nevill had five points and eight rebounds for Utah.

Justin Ringler scored 11 points to lead Grand Valley State, a Division II team from Allendale, Mich.

Shaun Green grabbed eight rebounds and had five steals for Utah, while Nevill recorded three of the Utes' nine blocks.

Utah's defense held the Lakers without a field goal for the first 8:56 of the game, allowing only two made free throws until the Lakers hit a layup at the 11:04 mark of the first half. The Utes outscored GVSU 21-6 over the initial 14:34 of the game en route to a 26-16 halftime lead.

Utah State 74, Concordia 60: At Logan, Tai Wesley had 14 points and eight rebounds, Gary Wilkinson had 14 points and six rebounds, and Tyler Newbold added 13 and five to lead the Aggies to an exhibition win. Damian Buckley scored 23 for Concordia.
