Old news wears well in winning costume

The challenge? To craft a Halloween costume entirely out of copies of The Salt Lake Tribune.

A bit self-serving, perhaps, but inventive readers helped us illustrate snazzy recycling techniques, while demonstrating a bit of Halloween ingenuity.

Submissions were somewhat sparse in our Halloween Costume Challenge - hey, as our art department knows, it's hard to construct anything beautiful out of newsprint - but two entries stood out.

Camilla Whitney, of Orem, won first place. She's pictured on Page E1 in her ingenious fair maiden's gown, complete with puffed sleeves, a sweeping apron and pleated skirt, all trimmed with black and silver duct tape. (Note how those fashion details don't obscure the headline type.)

Second place is awarded to Sara Olds' journalism class at Draper's Summit Academy Junior High, their creativity represented by Abbi Wheat, 14, of Draper, who created a mermaid costume.

Prizes will be awarded to these winners, and our thanks to all participants.
