And no way is the network going to give up that broadcast opportunity.
Kim Carver, the vice president and general manager of the network, said there are no thoughts of allowing the November game between Utah and BYU go to another station if any came asking.
"We have the rights," she said.
Furthermore, there are no plans for the game to be simulcast on any other networks. Last year's game was shown on the the mtn., Versus and CBS College Sports to give the game national coverage.
Now with DirecTV carrying the channel, Carver said simulcasting the game isn't necessary because her network is national.
In other words, if you don't have the mtn. and aren't planning to attend the game at Rice-Eccles Stadium, you'd better make some friends who get the network.
"We are pretty excited to be carrying the game," Carver said. "It could be a very big game."
Carver estimated her network is carried in about 5 million to 8 million households this season, compared with just 1.2 million a year ago.
"We've had significant growth," she said. "People have choices."
Even if the network wanted to simulcast the game it couldn't do so without disrupting other programming. CBS College Sports is locked into show a Conference USA matchup at 1:30 p.m. that the network isn't willing to adjust, according to corporate communications manager Dan Sabreen.
Versus is scheduled to show the Air Force at TCU game at 1:30 p.m. and the Oregon State at Arizona game at 5 p.m.
Carver refused to divulge how the three networks decide which games to air but did say the mtn. had the third pick of the three.
This will be the third time the Utah/BYU game has been aired by the network.
