Posted: 2:27 PM- VARESE, Italy - Salt Lake City cyclist David Zabriskie took home the bronze at the time trial world championships on Thursday, while Rowland-Hall graduate and American pre-race favorite Levi Leipheimer finished fourth.

Bert Grabsch of Germany won the time trial championship, finishing ahead of Svein Tuft of Canada.

Grabsch won the 27.16-mile race in 52 minutes, 1.6 seconds to beat Tuft by 42 seconds.

"It was a perfect day for me, the course was perfect, the weather was perfect," Grabsch said.

The 34-year-old Leipheimer failed to medal even though he seemed to be in top form after finishing second at the Spanish Vuelta, where he won two time trails. He finished third at the time trial at the Beijing Olympics.

Double world champion Fabian Cancellara did not compete after winning gold in Beijing.

The women's road race is Saturday, followed by the men's championship on Sunday.
