The New England Patriots' regular-season unbeaten streak had to end sometime. But at home? In a rout? To the Dolphins?

The Pats lost their first game since 2006, getting crushed by Miami 38-13 on Sunday in Foxborough, Mass. The defeat broke a record of 21 straight regular-season victories, stretching back to Dec. 10, 2006, when they lost to the Dolphins 21-0.

Quarterback Matt Cassel struggled in his second career start following the season-ending knee injury to Tom Brady. But it was the Patriots' defense that ultimately failed.

Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown ran for four touchdowns and passed for another. Four of those scores came off direct snaps to the running back.

''I don't know why in the world we couldn't stop that play. They just came in and beat our butts,'' New England safety Rodney Harrison said.

Sunday produced two overtime games - a 26-23 Giants victory against the Bengals and a 27-24 Bucs triumph over the Bears. And the Broncos won another slugfest, holding off the Saints 34-32.
