The personal injury lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday in 4th District Court, alleges that the former child star of "Diff'rent Strokes" punched the man then ran into him with his truck.
Colt Rushton, 24, of Spanish Fork, was bowling with friends on Sept. 6 when he saw Coleman, 40, in another lane bowling with wife Shannon Price and bodyguard Paul Rohbock, said attorney Dustin Lance.
Rohbock approached him and told Rushton he would have to pay $20 per picture if he continued, so he stopped and resumed bowling, Lance said. When the bowling alley closed, Rushton stopped to take a picture of Coleman's truck.
According to the complaint, while Rushton was taking the picture he was "attacked, without warning, from behind by Price and/or Rohbock, who clawed Rushton's arm and grabbed his cell phone away from him."
Coleman then hit Rushton several times in the chest, the complaint states.
Rushton said he did not want to fight, Lance said, and after further confrontation, Coleman, Price and Rohbock got in the truck with Rushton's cell phone.
"He's saying 'Gary, you can leave, I'm sorry, I'll delete the pictures, just please give me my phone back,' " Lance said.
At that point, the complaint states, "Coleman slammed the truck into reverse, swerved and swung the front of the truck into Rushton, hitting him, throwing him to the ground and possibly running him over."
The truck continued reversing and hit the car driven by Rushton's friends, Lance said.
Police arrived on the scene and forcefully removed Coleman from the truck, which, driverless, drove toward where Rushton was lying on the ground, the complaint states.
"At the last moment before impact, Rushton's friends pulled him to safety," reads the complaint.
Rushton's knee was torn open to the bone and may require surgery in the future, Lance said. He also suffered back and neck injuries, Lance said.
When the phone was later recovered by police, all Rushton's personal information and photographs allegedly had been deleted.
Rushton is seeking damages for past and future medical expenses as well as lost earnings and earning capacity.
Coleman was charged with misdemeanor reckless driving and disorderly conduct in Payson City Justice Court.
