Shinedown
When singer Brent Smith learned that his band Shinedown's third album, "The Sound of Madness," debuted on the Billboard album chart at No. 8 back in June, he told The Salt Lake Tribune he was "overwhelmed" and "extremely blessed." The hard rock band had been through a lot to make the album, losing two members during the 18 months of production. Smith and drummer Barry Kerch are the only remaining original members of the Tennessee band, and Smith said it was Kerch who "has seen me go through all these crazy times, drug addiction and alcoholism." Now clean, Smith said the band known for its acoustic cover of "Simple Man" is "the strongest it's ever been. . . . The last thing I want is for this band to die." The Nashville-based, cross-genre rock band RED opens, after its fantastic debut album was nominated for a Grammy. Jet Black Stare is also on the bill.

Head Like a Kite
The indie electronica-influenced shoegazer Head Like a Kite is out on its first out-of-Washington state tour since the release of its album "There Is Loud Laughter Everywhere." The band's publicist - a creative sort - said the band "is soon to blow into your fair city like happy dust bunnies in the wind." Trebuchet, Bring Your Guns and the Mooks are also on the bill.

Meiko
The Georgia-born singer-songwriter self-released her album late last year and watched it become the No. 1 folk album on iTunes. Like Abe Lincoln, she was born in a log cabin, but her life took a different turn after she got her start at the famed Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, where she first worked as a waitress. The Low Stars, Joe Purdy and Jay Nash are also on the bill.

Jazz on the Jordan
A West Valley City jazz festival will be presented as part of the World Stage Concert series at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. The concert will be preceded at 6:30 p.m. by a jazz history panel including BYU and Weber State instructors. The Salt City Saints and Swingn'Jive will perform New Orleans and 1920s Chicago jazz, along with 1940s and 1950s jazz. On Aug. 26, the two bands will perform at the same location between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.
