Posted: 9:43 PM- A 20-year-old man was charged Tuesday for robbing a Salt Lake City Sinclair station, where a clerk wrestled the man to the ground and a customer helped hold the man until police arrived.
The suspect approached the counter with a soft drink around 6 p.m. and handed the clerk a note that stated, "Just smile and shut up. Give me the money. I have a gun!!!" police wrote in charges.
The clerk did not see a gun, and when the suspect reached across the counter to grab money from the cash register, the clerk lunged over the counter and put the man in a headlock, police wrote.
A customer who saw the incident, which occurred at the Sinclair on 873 E. South Temple, helped the clerk detain the suspect until police arrived.
The suspect was later booked into the Salt Lake County jail.
