Pop Top: Miley shows she can be catchy, but preachy, too

Miley Cyrus, "Breakout"

Grade: C+

The intention?

For Miley Cyrus to separate herself from the "Hannah Montana" juggernaut.

The husky-voiced teen co-wrote eight of "Breakout's" 13 songs, and the first half offers a palatable serving of upbeat rockers.

"7 Things," the first single, is well-constructed and catchy, and Miley's cover of Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" is, well, fun.

The album takes a turn for the worse with "Wake Up America's" preachy platitudes about global warming that would make Al Gore wince. The rest is filled with sappy, identity-less ballads - but then at 15, does anyone know who they are?
