BYU's softball team began its regional play with a 3-0 shutout over No. 13 North Carolina in Chapel Hill on Thursday. A three-run homer by sophomore Angeline Quiocho gave BYU the runs it needed to pull off the upset. Christina Gwyn-Trice got the win giving up five hits and striking out three.
North Carolina's Danielle Spaulding allowed only four hits and struck out 14 BYU batters. The Cougars face No. 23 Georgia today. The winner of the double-elimination regional advances to the NCAA Super Regional.
Baseball
Utah 5, BYU 3: Utah's Corey Shimada hit a leadoff home run in the first inning, and Cody Guymon followed with a triple to later score off Dustin Hennis' single.
Southern Utah 6, Oakland 1: Southern Utah scored all six of its runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The win improves the Thunderbirds to 27-25, 14-10 in Summit League play, while the Golden Grizzlies drop to 14-28 and 6-12 in conference.
