Signing day is well under way at Brigham Young University, with 21 new recruits having put their names on the dotted line to join the Cougars as of noon Wednesday.

The Cougars were expecting up to 22 signees, but probably won't get the 22nd for up to six weeks.

Keith Nelson, father of former Utah State quarterback Riley Nelson, said his son will deliver a letter of intent to BYU when he returns from his LDS Church mission to Spain in March. Riley Nelson, a Logan High product who started a few games at quarterback for the Aggies his freshman year, announced in May that he planned to transfer to BYU.

"A far as we're concerned, there are no changes," Keith Nelson said. "He's still going to BYU. ... We feel like there is no worry, no rush."

Jordan Atkinson, a linebacker from Diablo Valley Junior College and the grandson of former BYU football coach Chick Atkinson, signed during the early-signing period for mid-year transfers in December.

Two other juco stars signed Wednesday: Brian Logan of Foothill College in Los Altos, Calif., and Lee Aguirre of Fullerton Community College in Fullerton, Calif. Both are cornerbacks.

One of BYU's primary targets has signed with Notre Dame. Manti Te'o, the LDS linebacker from Punahou High in Hawaii who was called the best middle linebacker prospect in the country by some recruiting Web sites, has picked the Irish over USC, UCLA and BYU, among dozens of others.
