Atlanta-based Skanska USA Building has announced that Brigham Young University won first and third place in its University Grant Project Competition.

The first place-winning group of four students designed a hospital emergency department aimed at responding to an infectious disease outbreak. The team won $4,000, and the students will have the opportunity to intern with Skanska in the summer.

The third-place winning BYU team took home $1,000 for its single-patient room, a hospital room that would be comfortable for a patient and would provide hospital staff with necessary tools.

The University of Washington, which has competed in the competition for three years, won second place for its ideal emergency department and health care facility responding to an infectious disease outbreak.

The contest was started by Skanska's Healthcare Center of Excellence in 2005.

Skanska is a provider of construction, pre-construction consulting, general contracting and design- services.
