The average price in Utah for a gallon of regular, self-serve gasoline now is $3.25, or 3 cents a gallon lower than the record-high price of $3.28 set on May 31, 2007, according to AAA Utah.
Still, the current statewide average price of gasoline remains 6 cents higher than last month's and 34 cents higher than that of a year ago. And it's still significantly higher than the national average of $3.07 per gallon.
"Below-average inventories [of gasoline] and high demand shot price up the last few months," AAA Utah spokeswoman Rolayne Fairclough said in a statement that was included in that organization's monthly gasoline price report.
Fairclough said gasoline inventories now are firming up and, along with the slight decrease in demand after Memorial Day, are offering some relief from the constant price increases of the recent past.
Almost all of the Utah cities surveyed by AAA saw the price of motor fuel increase during the past month, with Logan the lone exception, with a 2-cent-per-gallon decline from mid-May.
The average price in Logan is now $3.18. Ogden's price increased 1 cent to the current average price of $3.20. Salt Lake City's average price increased 2 cents to $3.19.
Provo drivers saw gasoline prices on average increase 5 cents a gallon compared with last month. The current average price in Provo now is $3.24.
The cost of gasoline increased 6 cents a gallon in St. George and now averages $3.30 while Vernal's average price jumped 9 cents to $3.28. Filling up in Moab increased 14 cents during the past month and now averages $3.36.
