Business Digest: HaleStorm offers $100 for 'Male Porn Star' DVDs
This is an archived article that was published on sltrib.com in 2005, and information in the article may be outdated. It is provided only for personal research purposes and may not be reprinted.

HaleStorm Entertainment is offering $100 to anyone who bought a DVD copy of “Sons of Provo” and received the Italian melodrama “Adored: Diary of a Male Porn Star” instead.

The Orem-based HaleStorm pulled copies of “Sons of Provo,” a PG-rated comedy about an LDS-influenced boy band, from retail shelves after learning three copies - two sold at Deseret Book outlets and a third bought by mail-order - contained discs of “Adored.”

HaleStorm founders Kurt Hale and Dave Hunter said that, in addition to the $100 offer to buyers who received the “compromised” disc, the company would donate $100 per returned disc to CP80, a nonprofit anti-pornography group “working towards categorizing all content on the Web into Internet channels.”

For information on how to exchange your disc, send an e-mail to contact@hstorm.com.

Weider's Web sales are up

Weider Nutrition International, Inc., doing business as Schiff Nutrition, on Tuesday announced net sales were $48 million for the first quarter, up from $43.7 million for the same period in fiscal 2005. In addition, net income was $4.9 million, or $0.18 per share, compared to $3.7 million, or $0.14 per share, for the same period a year ago.

"The approximate 9.9 percent net sales increase for our first quarter was fueled by a 16.9 percent increase in branded sales, most notably in our Move Free(R) joint care brand," said Bruce Wood, president and chief executive officer. "As expected, we experienced erosion in our gross margin primarily due to the ongoing higher raw material costs in a price competitive market. Our earnings per share increase was aided by a more favorable effective tax rate and certain unusual income items."

Weider, based in Salt Lake City, develops, manufactures, markets and sells branded and private label vitamins, nutritional supplements and sports nutrition products worldwide.

Q Comm, Check$mart team up

Q Comm International, Inc. (Amex: QMM; QMM.WS), a provider of prepaid transaction processing and electronic point-of-sale (POS) distribution solutions, will contract with Check$mart to install the Q Xpress 200(TM) POS terminal at more than 170 locations throughout Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, Florida, Utah and Arizona. Q Comm expects to complete the store roll out in the fourth quarter of 2005.

Under the terms of the contact, Check$mart will provide Q Comm's suite of prepaid products to check-cashing and payday loan customers, increasing the number of recurring customers. Selling prepaid services on demand via the Q Xpress 200(TM) terminal allows Check$mart to avoid problems associated with traditional prepaid cards, such as theft, inventory costs and stock outages.

Check$mart can also benefit from Q Comm's online sales reporting tools, which provide employee-level sales reporting.
