About 1,000 business leaders are expected to attend the Governor's Utah Economic Summit on Monday at Grand America Hotel in Salt Lake City.
In a noon address, Gov. Gary Herbert will highlight Utah's economic development efforts in the difficult times presented by the Great Recession. Since most economists believe the recession is over, the session will focus on the recovery period.
"We recognize there has been a national economic crisis, but that Utah has been fortunate enough to have a comparatively strong economy. We are actually prepared, and [Herbert] will speak to that point, for moving out of the nation's recession ahead of the pack," said Michael Sullivan, spokesman for the Governor's Office of Economic Development.
The summit begins at 8 a.m. with speeches by economist Kelly Matthews, who retired from Wells Fargo Utah in November, and Randal Quarles, managing director of the Carlyle Group and a former Treasury Department undersecretary.
Other speakers will be Pam Perlich, a University of Utah senior research economist and David Chen, managing director of Equilibrium Capital Group.
After the governor's speech, state officials will honor an individual and a company that have made significant contributions to the state's economy with "Economic Visionary" and "Economic Legacy" awards, respectively. Herbert also is expected to recognize other contributors to Utah's economic success.
Sullivan said it is not too late to register. "We will allow walk-in registrations, but at the full price of $150," he said, noting that registration Monday begins at 7 a.m. Advance signups can be done online at www.utahsummit.com. Coupons for $25 discounts will be printed today in The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News . Attendees must register online to use the coupons.
