Washington » Salt Lake Tribune Washington correspondent Matt Canham picked up two prestigious awards from the National Press Club on Monday for his work as a regional reporter covering Congress and for an in-depth study of nursing-home conditions in Utah.
National Press Club President Donna Leinwand, a reporter for USA Today , presented Canham, 29, with the Washington Regional Reporting Award, given to a D.C.-based journalist who best provides a clear understanding of issues and events relevant to a geographic region.
Canham also won the club's Joseph D. Ryle Award for Excellence in Writing on the Problems of Geriatrics.
The latter prize was awarded for Canham's series on the best and worst of Utah's nursing homes.
"When times are tough in the news business, it is especially important to celebrate excellence in journalism," Leinwand said. "These reporters represent the best of our craft. Their articles have exposed critical problems for consumers, kept our government and politicians honest and solved community problems. We are thrilled to honor them."
