Utah will benefit from about 100 new jobs as Mozy Inc. of Pleasant Grove is absorbed into a new company that was announced Monday.

EMC Corp., Mozy's parent, said it was blending Mozy and Pi Corp. of Seattle into a company that will offer online backup for digital files from computers or other devices and, eventually, ways to use and share those files.

The new company will be headquartered in Seattle, Pi's hometown. But Utah will see the largest concentration of employees in the new company, said Vance Checketts, chief operations officer of Mozy.

The new company, called Decho -- for digital echo -- will be looking to hire for 100 positions in Pleasant Grove, he said.

"We're estimating to roughly double our employees over the next year or two," he said.

Those jobs will include slots for various engineers and other positions that often offer much higher pay than the average Utah wage.

Mozy was started in 2005 and acquired by EMC in 2007. Mozy has more than 900,000 clients and 25,000 business customers. It stores more than 10 petabytes (10 million gigabytes) of customer information at data centers around the world that are known as clouds.

Pi, acquired by EMC this year, offers software for managing information on computers.

"There is an immense, untapped business opportunity as personal information management inevitably migrates into the cloud," David Goulden, EMC executive vice president and chief financial officer, said in a statement announcing the new company.

Mozy's Checketts said Decho initially will offer Mozy's backup products. But eventually, users may want to share files such as photos with friends, and that's where Pi's expertise comes in.

"Pi allows you to take that information that's already backed up in the cloud and share it with other people, private or public," he said.

The new company will be launching an advertising campaign soon, said Checketts.
